One of world's most spectacular tropical island systems,
Lakshadweep is tucked away at 220-440Kms off the Kerala Coast. The islands

4200 sq. kms. of lagoon, rich in marine wealth, is spread over 36 islands in an

water and the abundant marine life enhance the beauty of these islands. Against
the vast expanse of the blue sea, the island look like emeralds. The huge
shallow calm lagoon on one side with wall like reef made of marine live coral
boulders blocks the incoming swells of the outer sea. The islands are linked to
the mainland by:- ship, helicopter, Indian Airlines, Kingfisher Airlines and
mechanized sailing wooden vessels. The islands like Agatti and Bangaram can be
reached by ship and air from Cochin. From Agatti, Kadmat and Kavaratti are
linked by speed ferry. In all the islands, elaborate infrastructure is in place
to meet the needs of tourists.
The real attraction of the islands lies under the water: the
4200 sq km of pristine archipelago lagoons, unspoiled coral reefs and warm
waters are a magnet for flipper-toting travellers and divers alike.
Lakshadweep can only be visited on a prearranged package
trip. At the time of research, only the resorts on Kadmat and Minicoy islands
were open to tourists – most visits to the islands are boat-based packages
which include a cruise from Kochi, island visits, watersports, diving and
nights spent on board the boat. Packages include permits and meals, and can be
arranged though SPORTS.

The islands
Agatti: There is an airport here with direct flights from
Cochin. The combination of beaches, coral reefs, blue lagoons and palm trees is
seen to be believed. There are up-to-date facilities for snorkeling, kayaking,
sailing, scuba diving, fishing trips and any other related adventure sports
activity.
Bangaram: This Island is one of the best hideaways in the
world. The beautiful lagoons and the most amazing beaches are the hallmarks of
this Island. A lot of adventure sports activities are possible on this island,
primarily snorkeling, scuba diving and deep sea fishing.
Kavaratti: The capital of this island paradise is here. This
place has the most amazing beaches and the perfect lagoon with calm waters
which provides the ideal background for water sports and adventure sports.
Kayaks, yachts and glass-bottomed boats are available.
Kalpeni: It is known for its scenic beauty with the small
islets called Tilakkam & Pitti and an uninhabited island on the north
called Cheriyam. There is a large storm bank of coral debris here, one can swim
and reef-walk or indulge in water sports on kayaks, sail boat or pedal boat.
Kadmath: The best attractions of Kadmat are the long sandy
beaches and the sand banks on the southern tip for sunbath. The place is ideal
for a real holiday which will bring you away from the hustle and bustle of city
life. It is an ideal destination for the water sports and adventure sports as
there is a narrow lagoon towards the eastern side. You can indulge in water
sports like, Kayaks, Sailing Yachts, Pedal Boats, Skiing Boats and boats with
the glass bottom on hire. There is provision for Wind Surfing, Para Sailing,
Scuba Diving and Water Skiing.
Minicoy: It's the southern most island of this paradise
known as Lakshadweep. The largest lagoon is in this place and that offers you a
chance for kayaking, sailing and swimming. It's shaped like a half moon.
How to get there
Lakshadweep Island can be reached by ships and flights
operated from Kochi. For all tourist purposes Kochi is the gate way to
Lakshadweep.
Agatti and Bangaram islands can be reached by flight from
Kochi. Indian Airlines operate flights from Kochi. Onward flights from Kochi
are available to most of the airports in India and abroad. Airstrip is there in
Agatti island only. From Agatti boats are available to Kavaratti and Kadmat
during fair season October to May. Helicopter transfer is available from Agatti
to Bangaram Island Resort during monsoon and to Kavaratti through out the year.
The flight from Cochin to Agatti takes approximately one hour and thirty
minutes.
Six passenger ships - MV Kavaratti, MV Arabian Sea, MV
Lakshadweep Sea,, MV Bharat Seema, MV Amindivi and MV Minicoy operate between
Cochin and Lakshadweep. The passage takes 14 to 18 hours depending on island
chosen for journey. The ships offer different classes of accommodation: A/C
First Class with two berth cabins, A/C Secound Class with four berth cabins and
push back/Bunk Class with A/C seating. MV Tipu Sultan has a cafeteria, snack
bar, entertainment lounge and upper deck promenade for the tourists. A doctor
is available on call on board. MV Amindivi and MV Minicoy also offer
comfortable A/C seating ideal for a night’s journey.
